April 2010
Dear Friends of New Song,
Many in
our community just celebrated Easter and the
resurrection, a celebration which affirms the goodness
of God's creation and bodily life. However, many in the
Harlem community find their lives diminished because of
poor health. That is why we started the Harlem Center
for Healthy Living (HCHL) a little over a year ago.
Now with
250 members, HCHL provides screening tests, exercise
classes, and nutritional counseling to combat high blood
pressure, childhood obesity, diabetes, and heart
disease. As the spring arrives our Community Supported
Agriculture (CSA) effort is also getting underway for
its second year. This effort brings fresh fruit and
vegetables to families that have historically had diets
that were not conducive to good health. We are currently
working on providing a food stamp payment option to give
more of our neighbors an opportunity to participate.
As one neighborhood
participant said after getting fresh corn, "Oh man! I
never had it like that before. I'm eating all kinds of
new vegetables. This is great!"
HCCL is just one of the
many efforts in which we live out our faith and calling
to love our neighbors. Of course, our ability to make a
difference is dependent upon your generous partnership.
As always, we remain grateful for your prayers,
encouragement and financial gifts. We couldn't do it
without you!
Thank you so much for
standing with us to make a difference in the lives of
many!
May God richly bless you,
Rev. Jeffrey White
