Titus: Standing in the Current
How does someone follow Christ when facing strong cultural opposition?
Paul wrote a brief letter to Titus, his young protégé, to encourage him to help Christians thrive in a culture that exalted brutality, deception, and self-absorption. The island of Crete in the 1st century was not a place for the faint of heart. People couldn't trust others, depend on others, or even turn their backs on others. But Paul was convinced that if the message of Jesus could change him, it could change a place like Crete.
In the meantime, however, Paul knew that Titus would have to stand in a cultural current that could knock him off his feet and wash him downstream. Paul wrote to help Titus keep his feet and his faith and to make a difference in the lives of others, and his words can help us, too.
