Pilgrims Progress

Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan
I love Pilgrim’s Progress because I think in pictures. It’s why I love to use illustrations when I preach. I love that Jesus told stories rich with truth – we call them parables. John Bunyan wrote an allegory, a story, a parable (in 1678!) called Pilgrim’s Progress … about the journey through this life to heaven. It’s regarded as one of the greatest works in all English Lit! It is fun to read and soul-nourishing. Would be great to read together as a family this summer!

Hinds Feet on High Places

Hinds Feet on High by Hannah Hurnard
Hinds Feet on High Places is one of my favorite books because of the journey it takes you on. The main character is marked by her deepest insecurities, fears, and anxiety—hence her name, Much-Afraid. The story is about a Shepherd who calls her to something better, a new life, a new identity. She doesn’t have to be marked by her fears anymore but can be transformed by the work of the Good Shepherd in her life, even when He brings companions she may not want for the journey. This book helps remind me of my own journey with the Good Shepherd. He is truly taking me on a journey that I may not choose for myself but is all in preparation to bring me to the High Places with Him.

The Hobbit

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is my all-time favorite book. is a timeless adventure that takes readers on a journey through a richly imagined world filled with dragons, treasure, and unexpected heroism. It’s a perfect blend of fantasy and coming-of-age, where a reluctant hobbit named Bilbo Baggins discovers courage and cleverness he never knew he had. With its vivid storytelling and charming characters, it appeals to readers of all ages.

Wingfeather Saga

Wingfeather Saga Series by Andrew Peterson
My kids and I read the Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson two summers ago as read-alouds. We entered into the world of Aerwiar, and within a few chapters found ourselves enamored by this adventure-filled series set with all sorts of quirky creatures, hidden kingdoms, and ancient mysteries. Peterson's writing is both whimsical and profound, making it perfect for readers young and old. I'll never forget fumbling through the last few chapters of the fourth book, as tears streamed down my face, reading what is one of the best depictions of Christ's sacrificial love for us, the hope that all broken things will be made whole, and that the darkness will never be able to overcome the Light.

chronicle of narnia

The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis
In his essay, On Three Ways of Writing for Children, C.S. Lewis explains that "fairy stories" cause us to long for that which exists but cannot yet reach. They are fictional, fantastical echoes of the very real heaven and spiritual realm of God.  This makes them not only suitable for adults and children alike but indeed necessary for adults and children alike! Do yourself a great favor and immerse yourself headlong into Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia series.  Allow yourself to come to the story as we are to come to Jesus - as a child - voracious in the way we take in the world with the gift of wonder and belief.  Let these timeless stories illuminate the truth of the Gospel as only they can.

Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkein
The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien is not just a fantasy epic, but a profound journey through darkness, hope, friendship, and sacrifice. Tolkien, a devout Christian himself, weaves deep spiritual truths into this sweeping tale, reminding us that even the smallest person can change the course of the future. As you read, you’ll be stirred by courage, challenged by loyalty, and drawn into a vision of good that perseveres against overwhelming odds. It’s a story that will not only entertain you but nourish your soul.
